    Engine7 – Me, But Perfect -

Is Engine7 a solo project or more of a collective?

Right now there's six of us in the live collective, but the recorded stuff is just me. I'm more comfortable recording and writing alone, just finding my sound, but the girls who sing with me are just fantastic, and I'm looking forward to doing some new tracks with them soon.

You’re first release was the EP ‘Hope Street’ – a famous street in Glasgow - and you continue to use a succession of musicians and singers from the city in your work. How do you think the city affects your work, perhaps in mood or inspiration?

The music is a reflection of me as a person. I try to be quite honest, and not analyse it too much. The city influences my mood, yes, but for me, the music is just the stuff that has to come out. 'Hope Street' had that grimy, night time feel to it, which seemed to have a city centre oppressiveness. The title was ironic. I think the new album is truly one of hope though. …

I grew up on the likes of Tangerine Dream, Peter Baumann, Adrian Wagner and Kraftwerk so I like to think that I have a handle on electronics based music and the 'conceptual arts'. That having been said I also try to avoid albums claiming a high concept like the plague as they are normally no more than the masturbatory fantasies of a lonely child.

I first heard 'Sunrise, Catalonia (7:14am)' and 'Tempertantrum (11:36am)' as two sides of a…

  • Interview With Craig Murphy At Sonic Frontiers

    26. Apr. 2008, 8:53 von cm1974

    Sonic Frontiers

    Craig Murphy
    Interview by Sean Butze
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those who don’t know, Craig Murphy is a British composer of ambient electronica and IDM, as well as the founder of Herb Recordings and Ambidextrous Records. He records under two different projects, Weird Fields and Solipsism, and is also a member of the experimental folk band Shoosh. While preparing to release his next album, Craig was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to fill us in on his roles as a composer and record label operator.

    ----

SF: As a music artist, you’re involved in several different projects. Could you talk a little bit about your role in each, as well as what significance they hold for you?

Craig Murphy: The three main projects that I’m involved with are Solipsism, Shoosh and Weird Fields. Solipsism was always my main project, but over the past 6 months or so…
  • Engine7 Single Review At Losing Today

    Engine7
    Tempertantrum (11.36am)
    HERB004
    Format: Digital (promo single)
    Release Date: 28th April 2008

Engine7 ‘tempertantrum’ (Herb). Now this is what they refer to in the old country as the dogs bollocks. The work of a certain Alan McNeill, to date he’s released one acclaimed full length in the shape of ’hope street’ with second due to hit the streets shortly entitled ’me, but perfect’. this damn fine download only twin set isn’t due out for a week or two though we don’t mind saying this is going to set the cat amongst the proverbially pigeons once the underground cognoscenti hook up to it. The upbeat and club floor trouncing ’temper tantrum’ is a bit of a beast, the ominously impending cosmic widescreen swathed interludes from its initial opening give way to a pulse racing and rampant stratospheric dream coat of trance tripping montages and strobe lit lunatic swirls all courted by an irresistible and…
  • Carnivalesque (album) back in distribution in May

    12. Apr. 2008, 20:26 von ism

After distributor going bust at end of 2007 (Amato), the Rubens album is going back into distribution via Cargo sometime in May. Details will be confirmed nearer the time, but expect to see it available on CD format via usual outlets like Boomkat, Rough Trade, etc. It will also be re-released digitally via iTunes, Beatport, Bleep, etc as it came down after Amato went under.

There's VERY limited stock left of the 12" Breaking Into Smile EP [HERB003] featuring remixes by The Black Dog, Dextro and Kirk Degiorgio. The label has sold out, but there's copies out there via online stores if you look about.

We do have few remaining copies of the limited edition 7" promo of Puggies/Vertical Hold [HERB002] - visit the Herb site to order direct.

A new Rubens release isn't planned until next year, but keep an eye out for a spinoff project later this year, on an altogether more techno tip...

    Cheers,
    Rubens

  • The Best of 2007 Mix

    10. Jan. 2008, 22:47 von GrimOnMbient

A melodious survey of the year 2007 in a tearing rush, yet taking time for a few snapshots to memorize this year. This years edition is with a certain nonchalant touch as some transitions are on the very edge of being a close call. My will to put up a lot of favorite songs made that there are some abrupt transfers and sudden changes in style/mood. "where there's a will, there's a way" whether it's the right way is up to the listener. I decided to let it in as it happened along the process and because the mix is a random indication and on top of that it totally reflects my current state.
