I agree with most things written below. Me, as an huge Owl City, am very dissapointed with Mobile Orchestra. Especially because I enjoyed his latest stuff before it (Ultraviolet, Tokyo, etc.). Most of the songs on Mobile Orchestra are cheesy and sound like he had lack of inspiration while writing those. Verge I do enjoy, I Found Love and Thunderstruck are quite ok and except for the very boring chorus, I like Bird with a broken wing as well. Unlike the others below I like Back Home. Maybe because I'm Dutch and never listen/hear country in my daily life so it is quite refreshing. Nevertheless, I personally don't like the direction Adam is going now (especially singing akward Christian songs). Offcourse I don't hope this album will be a failure but I do hope this will be an eyeopener that he needs to refind himself as an artist again.
Therealmod: I think that this might just be what Adam wants to do, because he's said in interviews that he wants to do something more EDM-ish, so I don't know. Unless he's a complete puppet and just says that because the record label wants him to...
Agree with everyone else saying that the new album is absolute garbage.
I'm happy that we had to wait 3 years for a 10 song album, where 2 songs were previously released. Not to mention that he reuses melodies from Shooting Star/Good Time. Just overall a complete dissapointment. I hope that Universal is making him do crappy music like this (as evident on Verge where Adam said that Verge is supposed to be about a wedding and then all of a sudden it's about graduation) so that when the contract expires he can go back to making good music.
Oh well, at least there's a new Swimming With Dolphins album coming out soon.
Also, Unbelievable sounds a lot like Good Time but with whistling, and like someone said below, Verge sounds like Shooting Star, but Aloe Blacc makes it a lot worse. He's not a bad singer or artist by any means, but he doesn't fit with the song, and ends up sounding more like a country singer than the more soul-ish singer he really is.
The Midsummer Station was a good album for what it is, it has some really good songs despite not being what I wanted from Adam, but this new album is even less creative really.
OKAY, end of rant here.
But in the end, it's up to him what kind of music he wants to do. If his heart is not in it when it comes to doing more electropop-ish kind of stuff, then it won't be the same I reckon.
But maybe he'll change directions again in the future, we'll see.
I was very hopeful for the new album though after the EP as well, but yeah.
Back Home from Mobile Orchestra is by far the most shitty song he has done though, but that's just because of the random shitty modern country-dude singing on it.
I would be beyond happy if he released something new under the Sky Sailing-moniker that sounded just a bit more like older Owl City, then he can keep on doing dance-y stuff with OC.
But yet again, just wishful thinking, he's still amazing for making music that can make you feel like life is just a bit more magical.
I don't know guys, I agree with this being his weakest album by far. I mean, it's obvious that Adam is doing stuff that he likes, he has said that he wants to do more EDM-ish stuff, so sure, cool that he does what he wants.
But it just sounds so flat, it lacks the amazing feeling his previous work has. EDM can be quite cool, but it's obvious that it's not what he does best. If this is the direction he wants to go, fine... but it doesn't fit him, it just sounds like Zedd did some more happier-sounding beats with Adam singing on it.
I don't HATE Mobile Orchestra, but it's just so... flat compared to his earlier stuff. Nothing sounds like the first EP and the three first full-lengths. No, not The Postal Service, not Swimming With Dolphins, nope. It has a magical feeling that you can now only sort of sense behind all the dance-y beats. I seriously think that everyone would benefit from Adam doing music under two monikers, going all out EDM as a side project only.
The new album is the weakest album has released under any moniker. With the release of Ultraviolet I was hopeful, but this album has maybe 2 good tracks that would be WEAK tracks on any other pre-midsummer station OC Album
Agree with all of you, this album is garbage. "Unbelievable" and "Back Home" are two of the worst tracks I've ever heard from a mainstream artist, it's like he's not even trying anymore. "Thunderstruck" and "Can't Live Without You" are my only highlights, and they are still sub-par. I honestly hope this album bombs hard and serves as a wake up call.
I'll always be a fan, but this new album is pretty bad. It's overly repetitive.. "Verge" uses the same backing track as "Shooting Star" from the previous album, just a slight key change, and the use of a different instrument, and that's just 1 of 3 repeats I noticed.
2 good songs are "Thunderstruck" and "Bird with a Broken Wing"
