Down in the valley
In valley so low
Hang your hair over your shoulder
And you can hear the four wind blow

  • Solomon Burke's original version was completely different. Otis Redding sped it up and overall made it a better song. Burke liked Redding's take on "Down in the Valley" very much and in concert he always performed an upbeat version very similar to Redding's. To say Burke didn't have the same soul/passion as Redding, is silly. He was a very soulful man. Solomon Burke had a vocal range that very few singers have. He could sing anything. Otis Redding was an absolutely fantastic singer, and I love his records, but his vocal style was limited in a way. Jerry Wexler called Solomon Burke the best soul singer of all time, just like Peter Guralnick, and I agree with them. Burke's 1969 album "Proud Mary" is one of the greatest soul albums ever made. Not many people know that, and it's a shame. He had other great albums, though. For instance "Sidewalks, Fences and Walls" (1979) & "Nashville" (2006). The latter is a really excellent country album. By the way, Burke and Redding admired each other.
  • owww
  • Burke had just one really good album which was Proud Mary. Doesn't have the same soul/passion in his vocals to compete with Otis. 'Down in the Valley' and 'Shake' are my favorite upbeat Redding tracks by far.
