My iPod just played Doreen
by Frank Zappa
from the album You Are What You Is
. You Are What You Is is almost my least-favourite Zappa album (just ahead of Thing Fish
) so I probably woundn't have listened to it were it not picked at random.
But what a revelation! I've not listened to it in a while, and had completely forgotten what a blistering guitar solo it has on it. It starts off in the background, nudges its way into center stage by the middle of the song, and then you've got two minutes of seriously-fast fret-shredding. I know only us Zappaphiles appreciate what a great guitarist Frank was, but this pisses all over any hair-metal speed freak!
