  • I'm not totally sound in my recollections of Hines' career in the 1920s and 1930s. He was the pianist who most closely innovated along the lines of Louis on the trumpet (and Hines was on a number of the key Armstrong sessions during this era). Chimes in Blues shows Hines' melodic ambitions. He would have been playing at the same time as Waller and Tatum, who were both enormous fun and great virtuosi. Hines was the guy who experimented with melodic and rhythmic structures. Chimes in Blues show this process at work. It deserves more listeners.
