nice attempt. pity that james labrie kills the whole song. cant understand how he dares to try to sing what dio sang.
the rest is technically fine, like usual for dream theater. i miss the heart and feeling though.
Ehh i dont know this song just doesn't do it for me.. its not the performance but the writing of the song itself.. i was never really big on rainbow anyways, though i was delighted by rainbow in the dark :p
Makes you realise (along with the Queen covers on this CD) what an awesome singer James LaBrie is, he's really under-used in DT these days. I wish Portnoy & Petrucci would utilise him more in their songwriting; too few fans realise what a first rate singer he is.
this is my favourite song off the new album, i wish they still wrote their own songs like this. it's also depressing that while labrie can still sing so well, portnoy and petrucci keep writing such basic stuff for him to sing.
also, i think labrie's best (recorded) performance is actually the killing hand from live at the marquee.
I've heard about 200 versions of this song and DT's rendition doesn't stand out as anything spectacular, except for Petrucci's solo, he really nailed it. No cover-version can touch the original and it's not because it's old. It's because of brutal awesomeness of Blackmore and Dio -combo.
LaBrie doesn't sing like this because Portnoy is obviously wanting to go in a "heavier" direction which is totally retarded. If I was James I'd tell him to take away half his kit since that's what the rest of the band are essentially doing to their vocalist.
