  • My Favorite Music 2009 (And Five Songs I Hate)

    24. Dez. 2009, 22:45 von alacy52

It's been a pretty eventful year for me as far as music is concerned. I've gone to more concerts in a single year (seven) than I ever had before, I had a four month stint writing for The 9513, I visited the Eli Young Band on their tour bus and my iTunes library continued to expand and became significantly less mainstream.

Once again, I've put together a list of my favorites from the past year. For this year's list I've added a category, which is a bit of a power ranking of how good the concerts I went to were.

    Concerts I went to
    7. Newsboys with No Better Cause - Nebraska State Fair - Lincoln, NE
    6. Eli Young Band - UNL East Campus Mall - Lincoln, NE
    5. Zac Brown Band - Pershing Auditorium - Lincoln, NE
    4. Terri Clark and James Otto - Five Rocks Amphitheater - Gering, NE (review)
    3. Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley and Darius Rucker - Qwest Center - Omaha, NE
    2. Randy Travis - Nebraska State Fair - Lincoln, NE
    1. Gary Allan and Jamey Johnson - Heartland Events Center - Grand Island, NE (review)
  • "I Don't Like Country Music"

    11. Apr. 2008, 0:06 von heatherc

Over on a forum I participate in the ubiquitous topic of "I don't like country music" came up. One guy had this to say:

"I can't get into the whole line dancing thing, or the culture that seems to surround country -- traditional, white, god-loving, gun-toting, Christians (I'm none of those, well maybe just a little traditional). I'm not a big NASCAR fan either.

I know that not all country is like that, but regardless of the artist, that is how it comes across to me."

Now the way I see it this guy is basically saying, I'm comfortable with my long-held prejudices about music and those who listen to it, and I choose to ignore anything that may negate my beliefs. If I want to really give him the benefit of the doubt I could suppose what he's saying is the country sound reminds him of these things that he doesn't like and thus he can't enjoy listening to it. Much the way, after a bad breakup, someone may no longer be able to listen to a song they used to like. …
  • Modern Murder Ballads

    16. Feb. 2008, 3:14 von heatherc

There have pretty much always been murder ballads in folk and country music. Songs like Omie Wise (and its name variations), Stack O' Lee (and its name variations), and, to bring things slightly more up-to-date, Folsum Prison Blues, have been covered innumerable times. But these types of songs are still being written and ought to be recognized and covered just like their traditional counterparts. Here’s a mix of some murder ballads from the past 25 years that, with any justice, will still be performed by people in another 100. (I had to go back that far because the song that inspired this mix was Flowers In The Dell, which was released in 1983.) I’m sure I’m missing lots of great choices, but I have a problem of starting things and not finishing them so I wanted to get this done before I got distracted.

    Modern Murder Ballads

    1. Flowers In The Dell - Fred Eaglesmith
    2. Murder In The Afternoon - Peter Bruntnell
    3. The Kindness of Strangers - Nick Cave
  • Streaming radio

I can still remember how exicted I was first time RealAudio streamed real live radio over my old Mac. Damn near wet my britches. that's been awhile now, the internet's gone broadband, world's gone nuts.

Since I started scobblin', I've been more selectively streaming (destination radio rather than background noise). Yet now that my profile's approaching 10,000 tracks, it's fairly representative of the favs in my library. Still nice to see the Giant Computer Brain recc stuff that's still in boxes at home. Best go fetch Artist X.

Haven't run the last.fm radio stream all that much yet. Find I need to pay attention to it:
    1. last.fm radio scobbles into the profile. You can delete tracks. I'm lazy.
    2. Recc Radio is distracting. productivity at work=crap.
    3. Home=dialup

So, my old online Americana radio friends are still getting some listens, outside the Scrobblerzone:
