My Order of Preference would be Matthews Southern Comfort, Joni's version and this one, but to be fair, they are all great, and my preference might only be the order I originally heard them in. That she intended this for CSN might explain the bit where she sings, "by the time we got to Woodstock", because Joni of course famously never made it to Woodstock.
This song always makes me sad. There will never be another woodstock, a coming together for hundreds of thousands of people with no killing or riots. and it is something i think that my generation could use a shot of.
"Well I came upon a child of God,he was walking along the road...And I asked him tell me where are you going, this he told me..Said,I`m going down to Yasgur`s farm, going to join in a rock & roll band...Got to get back to the land and set my soul free ...We are stardust,we are golden,we are billion year old carbon... And we got to get ourselves back to the garden"....................Somebody else take over singing this please while I remember where I hid my Weedstock
I love this and I'm lucky enough to have Déjà Vu on vinyl! I think Matthews Southern Comfort fit the Woodstock vibe better but this is just awesome. I love both versions equally as well as Joni's original - her voice is fantastic, but the back up singers get on my nerves on that version.
