After recently doing some work on a dvd of a reggae super-concert in Miami from this year called Memorial Fest I was turned on to a man named Cocoa Tea
. Cocoa was definitely the oldest of the bunch at Memorial Fest, where the likes of Beenie Man
, Shabbba Ranks
and Bounty Killer
performed. It reflected in his performance. Instead of the dance-hall, get-busy style of reggae the others were doing Cocoa Tea brought it back to basics with his own brand of roots reggae.
He stole the show in my opinion and I later found that Cocoa Tea is a huge superstar in Jamaica, as he should be. I rushed out and got the first record I could find by him, "20 Tracks Of Cocoa Tea". What seemed like a cheap knockoff bootleg from the looks of the packaging ended up yielding a bevvy of ridiculously good songs. It was between "20 Tracks" and a newer Cocoa Tea record with depicted him on the cover looking a little out of his element wearing a stupid hip hop jacket. …
