• APRIL 2012

    Hey folks!
For new members, here’s how it goes. Below there are some themes and a list of pairs. Pick a theme, find your name, and make a mix for the person you're matched with. You can discuss the theme beforehand with your partner or not, it’s up to you. Easy as that.

Please read the Important Post in the Forum if you want a refresher on technical stuff and membership policy. (http://www.last.fm/group/The+Monthly+Mixtape/forum/45288/_/221537 )

Every month, we have four optional theme categories. Categories stay the same, themes change monthly. Consider them suggestions if you don't know what kind of music to put together. Interpret the theme however you like. But most of the longtime members are fanatically creative in applying a theme.

    Share your theme ideas!

This month’s Alchemist is vitreus, who has been with the group since its inception. Vitreus has made TONS of theme suggestions over the years, so I thought it apropos to let him pick ALL the themes up for voting this month. And the group has spoken. Here are the poll results:.

    Themes for April:
    1. "Elementary" (is this too easy?)
    2. "Elixir of Life" (a.k.a. immortal themes that will not die)
    3. "Hermetic Order of Alchemists, no. 4: vitreus
.....APOCALYPSE NOW? THE END OF THE WORLD..... a mix to end all mixes; something to listen to until 12/21/12..Automatic disqualification for using R.E.M. - It’s The End Of The World (As We Know It). And the last track had better be good...
    4. "Philosopher's Stone" (more challenging)
.....SCENES..... Songs that paint a scene in your imagination. For example, Boards of Canada’s “In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country”.

For you visual types looking for inspiration, here's the picture of the month

    Now, for the pairings:
    wallabyted - Karlientjeuh
    uareariot - muzikizum
    blackadder_de - martyrofevil
    01010100 - ponchosqueal

    The End

I know it's early. I was inspired by the idea of making an end of the world mix. It's not exactly what is described. I took it quite literal. The last track isn't so much a song as it is bomb so the bit about the last track being good will depend on how much you like the sound of an atomic bomb going off. There's not that many tracks but it still runs over 50 min. I found the first song while looking for Duck and Cover sound clips from the old 50's film and it's awesome (at least I think it is).

Anyways here it is. I hope you guys enjoy it because I had a lot of fun making it.

    The End

    01. Rev T - Duck and Cover
    02. The Blood Brothers - Lift the Veil, Kiss the Tank
    03. Interpol - Wrecking Ball
    04. Does it Offend You, Yeah? - Doomed Now
    05. Ima Robot - What Comes Tomorrow
    06. Air Raid Siren
    07. God Forbid - The End of the World
    08. Tiger Army - Atomic
    09. The Postal Service - We Will Become Silhouettes
    10. Atomic Bomb

  • - Words create lies. Pain can be trusted. -
  • I guess mine also turned into an "End of the World" mix. It is quite a bit heavier than what I typically listen to. Enjoy.

I am catching my death in the violence of this storm

The Human Flight Committee - Oh, The Beginning
Plumb - Late Great Planet Earth
Enemy Ships - Bullets And Guns
Staple - Gavels From Gun Barrels
    Stavesacre - Witch Trial
Submission Red - Signal The Smoke
    The Classic Crime - Gravedigging
Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster - Hell On The Rise
Thieves & Liars - Betrayed By Blood
He Is Legend - Serpent Sickness
Colour Revolt - Our Homes Are Graves
    Beloved - Death To Traitors
Red Letter Bullet - Bringing Down Colossus
Don't Wake Aislin - To Escape The Tempest And Storm
Maylene and the Sons of Disaster - The End is Here... The End is Beautiful

My mix for crazystargrl directs to last year Barcelona’s Primavera Sound Festival, staying under ‘Scenes: songs that paint a scene in your imagination’…

The Festival is a beautiful site jutting out into the Mediterranean, with glorious punctuality on every stage, and great sound. Add in one other key factor – pretty much guaranteed good weather - and you can see the appeal to me.
It takes place every May and last year, in its 11th year Primavera (spring in Spanish) has grown from a small eclectic gathering to a major player on the world music circuit. The music itself was a mixed bag of 220 acts, with some marquee names like The Flaming Lips, Grinderman, Mercury Rev, The National, Pulp and John Cale, propped up by a huge number of bands that have no massive record sales to boast or are emerging in the digital age of new music media.
The action tended to kick-off at about 4.30pm with shows continuing on until about 6am the following morning. At first it seems astonishing but one quickly adjusts to this nocturnal pattern which still allows you some time to indulge in the treats of the city. I shared an apartment and with a metro stop just two minutes away we could be at the gates of the festival in about 20 minutes.

When Jarvis Cocker acknowledges the plight of the injured protestors from the peaceful demonstration in Plaça de Catalunya the same evening as Pulp perform live for the first time in nearly 10 years, he dedicates Common People to them and the crowd erupts. It wasn’t an empty gesture but one which is built on the genuineness of the shared passions of all the people at this festival - both performers and audience.

Well, it’s difficult not to enjoy three days with such excellent musical company. Of course, after the Festival we need some days to fully recover. A visit to Primavera is also a visit to Barcelona. The festival-goer is immersed in the Barcelona lifestyle: good coffee, fine foods, a visit to see some Gaudi or a trip to the beach... Good memories!

So, this is a compilation of some live performances I saw and that will stay forever tied with me.

    01 Caribou - Odessa (Live)
    02 Glasser - Mirrorage (Live)
03 Field Music - Them That Do Nothing (Live)
04 Active Child - Hanging On (Live)
05 Fleet Foxes - Blue Ridge Mountains (Live)
    06 Low - Nightingale (Live)
    07 Deerhunter - Helicopter (Live)
    08 P J Harvey - Let England Shake (Live)
09 Mercury Rev - The Dark Is Rising (Live)
    10 Sufjan Stevens - I Walked (Live)
11 Pulp - This Is Hardcore (Live)
12 The National - England (Live)
13 Perfume Genius - Learning (Live)
14 The Fiery Furnaces - The End Is Near (Live)

16 The Walkmen - Juveniles (Live)

  • My mix partner Martyrofevil and I have a rather low musical compability. To change that, I picked the five common denominators that Last.fm gave me (First Aid Kit, Fleet Foxes, The B-52's, Depeche Mode and The Beatles) and tried to throw together music in that vein. So here comes

i went with the apocalypse theme for obvious reasons, and though i had intended to do some of the other themes too, this month was pretty terrible for a lot of reasons and i didn't get to them.

this mix is for unread_, though our charts don't have much of a cross-section. so i hope this mix doesn't scare or offend, as there's some pretty fucked up shit to be found here. ;) the two tracks i built the mix around are #3 and #5, which have always struck a chord in me since i first heard them years and years ago. from there i went to flesh out the story. the last track is one of my own, and i played a "custom" instrument i call the "absonus", which doesn't exist anymore. my friend Matt does the main reading, but you can hear me layered underneath if you try real hard. the words are adapted from a longer piece i wrote after watching "New World", which was admittedly not a great movie, but it got me thinking. my other influence was the "King & Sandwich" section from Hitchhikers Guide.

anyway, let me know what you think!

    Mayans Schmayans!
01 Void of Silence: Prelude to the Death of Hope
02 Veni Domine: Behold the Signs
    03 Saviour Machine: American Babylon
    04 Decree: Finite Years
    05 Circle of Dust: Descend
06 A Storm of Light: Collapse
    07 Scarlet: Untitled
08 Thursday: This Song Brought To You By a Falling Bomb
09 Natural Snow Buildings: Guns & Rifles
10 Gnaw Their Tongues: Le chant de la mort (Song for the Dead)
11 Elend: Le Fleuve Infini Des Morts (The Infinite River of Dead)
12 Nine Inch Nails: The Day the Whole World Went Away
13 Pink Floyd: Goodbye Blue Sky
14 ...an ellipsis: The Face of Neglect

    TRT: 65:56

listen to the noise i make and leave me a comment about it.

  • I know I'm in the right group with so many apocalyptic mixes. It warms my heart. Maybe that's just the radiation sickness.

    14. Robert Wyatt - To the Old World (Thank You for the Use of Your Body, Goodbye)

  • Add another Earth in flames to the fire (with a little recolonization twist). This for beautifulwaste.

    A few notes:
-Due to the No 'It's the End of the World As We Know It' clause, I couldn't help but start out with REM
-My collection is not nearly as apocalyptic-friendly as I would have originally assumed
-I try and avoid repeats of previously-posted mixes, but as my son's name IS Declan, I claim exception for Elvis Costello songs

    Get it here: http://db.tt/l2xq3CqE

    01 REM - Endgame
    02 Mark Sultan - Warpath
03 Thin Lizzy - Angel of Death

15 Gorillaz - Every Planet We Reach Is Dead
16 Blue Oyster Cult - ETI (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)
17 Alejandro Escovedo - The End

And as a special 'treat' (hahaha!) here's 'Apocalypse,' a little ditty of mine from about 15 years ago. I'm not singing -- I'm just responsible for the crappy tempo-challenged guitar work. Have fun! http://db.tt/UsLVX5De
