    Sonic Youth
    Pixies !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Like many said before me:
    The Velvet Underground
    The Jesus and Mary Chain
    Neutral Milk Hotel
    Sonic Youth

  • For me it was Modest Mouse. Much like the Pixies and Pavement, they established a foothold on Alternative radio, and when I had the good fortune to lose my local alternative station, I started seeking out bands that sound like Modest Mouse on my own. Now indie rock is my genre of choice after years of just swallowing whatever mainstream alternative radio was playing at the time.

I agree that "indie" is not a genre. "Indie rock", though, is, and that's what we're all talking about.
It's also not a great thing to discuss the most important indie bands, since you can measure importance, influence, etc.
The most relevant indie rock bands in my life are:
    Sparklehorse (RIP Mark Linkous)
Pixies (and everything Frank Black touches)
The New Pornographers (and A.C. Newman's solo career)
Pavement (but not stephen malkmus' solo projects. sorry)
The Shins (probably the great band of the last decade. Flake Music, which is the pre-shins album, is awesome, and everybody that loves the shins will like 'em raw)

    bend or break
  • Hüsker Dü --> Dinosaur Jr. --> The Pixies

I'm disappointed by people mentioning the likes of The Kooks and Franz Ferdinand

Surely, Pixies, Smiths and even Libertines suggest that Kooks and Franz havent done anything for the indie rock sub genre? In fact its not even correct to say they are important to music as they havent done anything that stands out

  • Sad to see bands like The Killers & The Kooks etc mentioned. Thought we were tallking about INFLUENTIAL bands? So... surely if we say Pavement, Sonic Youth, Pixies are influential (which they were) then their influences deserve a honourary mention... bands like Swell Maps, Husker Du & The Fall. Neil Young also deserves a mention, the guy must have influenced literally hundreds of bands during his career.

  • i think pink floyd was pretty influencial to the indie scene.
i mean come on, dark side of the moon anyone?

  • I think there's a great difference between those bands which may be considered revoluotionary or influential and those bands which are actually important 'indie' bands.
Theres certainly a case for saying the Velvet Underground started independent music, the original concept behind 'Indie' music. Really though i consider Indie as we know it as a response to punk, also taking influences from a plethora of other genres such as Folk, Electronic Dance- the list could go on. By judging modern Indie successes, you could argue that Bob dylan to the Pet Shop Boys have influenced Indie greatly; there are plenty of bands/artists that though not necessarily themselves Indie, have made an invaluable contribution to the genre. Influentially, I would suggest bands like the smiths, joy division, the velvet underground, the clash, sonic youth, radiohead, the pixies, the libertines etc. Though maybe not revoloutionary, i don't think its right to bellittle the achievements of bands like the arctic monkeys, bloc party, and the killers for example whose talent has pushed the genre to a wider audience and youd be mad not to love! You could argue that maybe indie isnt even a musical genre, maybe just a certain sound/intention/state of mind. Either way, it encompasses so many genres and subgenres- not to mention shades of commerical/cult success- that its practically impossible to define the most important bands. Personally I'd say the Velvet underground, the smiths, joy division are up there for definite though

Its a little off topic, but I dont give a shit if people think that Radiohead is not indie and i dont care even if they are because they influenced modern indie more than any other band even old school. So I think they are important for indie music. And Animal Collective of course.
