    The Worse of Zappa

I'm not a great fan of Zappa's orchestral stuff, nor the synclavier records. But these are the five "rock albums" I like least:

*Cruising with Ruben and The Jets
    *Lumpy Gravy
    *Hot rats
    *Them or us
    *Guitar

    X-kuzem I langwich.

I wouldn't call Cruising or Lumpy gravy 'rock'. Crusing is FZ's back to the doo-wop part of the musical roots of his youth. Traces of doo-wop can be found through the years in a lot of his albums. Lumpy is FZ's first attempt to experiment with orchestral music: where's the 'rock'?.

Sure, Guitar is a rock album & I can't listen to all of it in one session, but is has it's moments (such as In-a-gadda-Stravinsky). BTW, why didn't you mention Guitar's predecessor Shut up etc?

Them or us is a bit boring.

But ehh... What is wrong with Hot rats? To me it is one of his all time masterpieces and one of the best jazzrock albums ever, comparable with albums like Miles' Bitches brew.

    Make a jazz noise here.
    The Grand Wazoo, wonderful album.
    And "Chunga's Revenge", of course.

With "rock albums" I meant all the albums except the orchestraded (?) ones (LSO, Perfect Strangers, Yellow shark etc), and the synclavier stuff (Civilisation III, Francesco, Jazz from Hell etc). So please don't take the word "rock" so seriously. =)

The big difference between "Guitar" and "Shut up..." is the drummers. I love "Shut up..." – Vinnie rules big time! =)

    • Top 5
    • We're Only In It For The Money
    • Hot Rats
    • Zappa In New York
    • One Size Fits All
    • Freak Out

    • Bottom 5
    • Meets the Mothers of Prevention
    • Cruisin' With Ruben and the Jets (Remastered, the original vinyl without the 80s rhythm tracks is alright)
    • Lumpy Gravy
    • Make a Jazz Noise Here
    • You Are What You Is

It's all subjective though. The ones I don't particularly care for I know a lot of zappa fans love. And even they have some redeeming moments that I hold in very high regard (Doreen, What's New In Baltimore).
