    I thought I had written about The Go! Team before, when I first heard My World [YouTube], their cover of Alan Parker's The Free Life [Hype Machine], on Proof of Youth. Clearly not.

    I'm glad I waited because their third album, Rolling Blackouts, released a couple of months ago, is their best yet. My recommendation of the week is the standout track, Yosemite Theme.

    Like My World, it's an instrumental, but this time, it's their own, mashing together Ennio Morricone-type country themes, a banjo, a harmonica, a harp and Bollywood, incorporating elements of Yeh Ladka Hai Allah Kaisa Hai Deewana recorded by Mohammad Rafi [YouTube] and Ab To Hai Tumse recorded by Lata Mangeshkar [YouTube, first track].

    Yosemite Theme is, like all their work, relentlessly upbeat and hyper, taking on a sophistication The Go! Team have yet to fully explore. It ends on schoolground chants which are kind of by-the-by, reminding you who you're listening to.

    I can't honestly say I was much of a fan before. I found the lo-fi, gritty, sometimes shrill sound grating and the euphoria annoying. The inclusion of an exclamation mark in their name didn't help their case. Too hipster for me. However now, three albums down the line and their unique sound firmly established, with the confidence to explore and experiment, now I like them. They haven't lost their early unfinished lo-fi playfulness, it's still there, but now it's measured and balanced.

    Musically, they're a mix of indie rock, indie pop, electronica, 80s hip-hop and old classic TV themes of the 70s, heading towards 60s girl bands and Motown, with an eye on Bollywood, Tokyo and the wild west; old school at school. In a sentence.

    Like too much time spent with small children, The Go! Team on repeat are exhausting. There seem to be no breaks. This sense, along with the skipping rope chants, further underlines where they're coming from. It would be easy to dismiss them as a band for the pre-teens, but that would be to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Sonically, there is much for adult ears to enjoy, albeit perhaps in small doses.

    The album begins with the explosive klaxon of a track T.O.R.N.A.D.O, which is too much for me and I skip. So my first track is the lovely Secretary Song, which sounds Japanese and uses real office sounds, featuring guest Satomi Matsuzaki of Deerhoof. Firmly enticed into Go! Team world, you may as well turn the volume up and join in. Best Coast's Bethany cosentino features on lead single Buy Nothing Day. Track after track, beat after beat, with pea whistles and cheers, it's a party and they're irresistible.

    Welcome relief comes with this week's track, Yosemite Theme, the adorable Ready To Go Steady "Yeah we only just met but I'm ready to go steady", Super Triangle, which is a bit like the Alan Parker cover again, and the strange, acoustic piano piece Lazy Poltergeist.

    Some critics have been quick to dismiss these tracks as failings. I think they are essential in order to fully appreciate the high energy of the other tracks. You may not hear them properly if you listen to the album in its entirety, so pick them out one by one.

    Rolling Blackouts bounces along and punches the air with infectious, sunny joy. You can't help but smile at the very least. Where The Go! Team go from here, who can say. More of the same but better is always good, but I'd like to see them develop these (for them) quieter tracks.

    River to River. Florence Indian Film Festival, under the direction of Selvaggia Velo, will have its seventh edition in Florence, Italy, from December 7th to 13th, 2007.

    Once again, the event will be supported by the Ministry of the Cultural Heritage - Cinema Department, Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, Banca Toscana, Regional Council of Tuscany, Quartiere 1, India Tourism Office of Milan, sponsored by Apt Firenze, Hotel Roma, Instyle and Lisa Corti Firenze, with the assistance of Mediateca Regionale Toscana Film Commission, and both The Florentine and as media partners.

    The Festival will offer viewings of the latest independent Indian films, with a wide range of feature films, short films and documentaries, and the latest works on India by international directors.
    Actors, directors and producers will be there to meet the press and speak of their films with the audience.

    One film from each category will be voted by the audience to win the River to River Digichannel Audience Award: an extract from the film can be viewed in streaming mode at all through 2008.

    The schedule includes a retrospective on Bimal Roy ), one of the greatest Indian film directors of the past, who is often compared to Italian Neorealist film directors for his stories and subjects. Thanks to Mr. Roy’s family, three of his masterpieces will be screened, in collaboration with the National Film Archive of India and the Directorate of Film Festivals: Do Bigha Zamin (Two Acres of Land) of 1953, reminiscent of De Sica’s Ladri di biciclette; Devdas (1955), the remake of which by Sanjay Leela Bhansali was nominated for an Oscar in 2003; and the heart-breaking Bandini of 1963.
    In order to give a full portrait of Bimal Roy, the Festival will screen, for the first time in Europe, the documentary Remembering Bimal Roy by the director’s son, Joy Roy.

    As usual, between one film and the next, do not miss the food tastings offered by the Indian Restaurant of Fiesole, a heaven of Maharaja cuisine.

    This year, the Festival has started working with new partners in events that will go on all through Autumn 2007:
    •within the framework of the Festa del Cinema di Roma (18-27 October), a side event will be organised by Tad Art Events. For the occasion, Selvaggia Velo and Francesca Micheli of River to River. Florence Indian Film Festival will offer a selection of Indian short films, which will be screened in Rome on October 23rd on a bus fitted out in Indian style and at the Apollo 11 cinema, which will also host a meeting on the Indian movie industry;
    •during the Festival della Creatività of Florence (25-28 October), four short films from the 2006 River to River. Florence Indian Film Festival will be screened on Saturday October 17th at the Teatrino Lorenese at Fortezza da Basso.

    Going off the beaten track. Down dark alleys with just a torch and my fingers crossed, hoping I'll be ok. Being brave and trying anyway.

    Trying to find out about music that the press doesn't cover, that there is no convenient MySpace page for let alone a next-to-useless artist's own website, is already proving frustrating and I've only just started. Sometimes, there's a reason why there are so few listeners, and it ain't nothing to do with quality! } I

    I don't mind being challenged, that's fine, I expect that. I do mind being insulted. You can't make any old racket, slap a label on it and call it music. Sorry, it doesn't wash with me, not even if you tell me you come under some fancypants underground über-cool genre. Not impressed. Look at my face -> : / Basically, it's not enough.

    I don't know what other people do, but I try to let my instincts guide me. The advantage of hearing something before everyone else is I don't feel obliged to agree/disagree with other people. (Self-esteem issues, I'm sure). It's just me and the music and I get to decide for myself. I like that.

    On my list of non-mainstream sources to check out are:

    * join groups that specialise in genres I'm interested in, or that focus on non-commercial/non-mainstream music

    * try tag radios that people have built

    * listen to 'artists similar to'

    * listen to tagged genres, eg

    * browse for reviews and journals

    * ask people

    * search the web for specialist sites, eg the latest in Bollywood, latest folk news, etc. Then read them all regularly! :s

    * listen to specialist radio online, eg SOAS

    One thing I'm a bit stumped on is how / where I'm going to find out about the latest news in classical and opera. I know I could read the Sunday papers, but that's not good enough because I can't hear what they're talking about. In any case, I'm not very impressed with the current stable of Russell Watson, Russell Watson, Katherine Jenkins, *cringe* Charlotte Church, and then yet more flamin' Russell Watson. I am also not keen on bratty conducters imposing their will* on classical music, so I think I might have to accept I'm a Royal Philharmonic Orchestra girl and just leave it at that. Which is rubbish because how can I call myself a music reviewer if I'm having trouble with an entire world of music?? Does opera have to stop at Maria Callas? Seems to, for me.

    This new project of mine is going to be difficult because I want things now. Yesterday. But I don't want anyone else to do the filtering for me. I want to do that myself. In order to do that, I have to subject myself to stuff I don't like (and yes, utter dross). So I'd best keep some paracetamol handy, huh?
