Manny Oquendo's Libre under the direction of Andy Gonzalez
Manny Oquendo & Libre are keepers of the flame. The nine-member band carries the torch of early Afro-Cuban percussion and breathes the fire of a 1970s salsa conjunto„in short, Manny Oquendo & Libre are preserving the best traditions of Latin music to evolve this century. But the group's assemblage of heavyweight musicians, led by percussionist Manny Oquendo and bassist Andy Gonzalez, doesn't stop there. Libre is also pushing Latin music into the next century. Listen to their new Milestone release, Mejor Que Nunca, and the way they set a Marvin Gaye classic to the syncopated beat of a mambo-guaguanco, or launch a Cuban danzón with a massive trombone line electrifying the stately rhythm, and you'll understand why the band is truly "Libre" -free.

plus guest jazz soloists Sonny Fortune
When critics speak of Sonny Fortune, names like Coltrane, Cannonball, Young, Bechet, Hawkins and Parker are mentioned. Quite a legacy - but well deserved - for Sonny Fortune embodies all of the finest qualities of those late, great musicians: hard work, dedication to his art, and exceptional music. Lucky for us, Sonny is still here and blowing hard.
One of the world's preeminent jazz innovators, trombonist and seashellist Steve Turre, has consistently won both the Readers' and Critics' polls in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazziz for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells). Turre was born to Mexican-American parents and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area where he absorbed daily doses of mariachi, blues and jazz. While attending Sacramento State University, he joined the Escovedo Brothers salsa band, which began his career-long involvement with that genre.
