Rihanna was always a comfortable contender for the Best of 2010 chart, but her fourth album, Rated R, must already seem like a distant memory for fans. In fact the Bajan R&B star's new record Loud is already on the shelves, and could well be a contender for the Best of 2011.
Rated R provided Rihanna with a string of darker, often downbeat hits during the year, many including lyrical references to her much-reported assault at the hands of former boyfriend, singer Chris Brown. The album took musical inspiration from dubstep and rock on tracks like 'Wait Your Turn' and 'Russian Roulette', which picked up nearly 2.5 million scrobbles between them.
Luckily, Rihanna also had a summer smash up her sleeve in the shape of 'Rude Boy', a sexed-up dancehall single which scored 2.3 million scrobbles on its own.
Following the now-standard blueprint for contemporary pop careers, Rihanna plans to make her acting debut in 2012 in Battleship, Peter Berg's sci-fi naval warfare movie - not to mention keeping an eye on her book, fashion and fragrance lines, of course.
