The ever-prolific Damon Albarn returned with his most popular project this March, bringing with him an all-star cast of performers as well as long-time Gorillaz collaborator Jamie Hewlett and virtual pop stars 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel.
With guest spots from artists as diverse as Snoop Dogg, Gruff Rhys, Kano and Lou Reed, Plastic Beach got tongues wagging long before release with both critics and listeners embracing the band's new direction on their third studio album. Singles like the pulsating 'Stylo' and hip hop-flavoured 'Rhinestone Eyes' showcased a polished, electronic sound, while 'On Melancholy Hill' was easily your favourite Gorillaz track of the year, picking up over 1.4 million scrobbles.
Gorillaz also proved to be a surprise hit on the summer festival circuit, headlining California's Coachella and bravely stepping into U2's abandoned slot on Glastonbury's Pyramid stage in June. The band's live line-up now includes Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash and a rotating selection of guests, including Shaun Ryder of the Happy Mondays and grime MC Bashy.
