While pop rules the Best of 2009 pretty unashamedly, the success of Animal Collective proves that a wider audience has developed a taste for some of the stranger side of the genre in the last few years. Alongside fellow Best Of... act Grizzly Bear the four-piece collective have brought experimental pop and freak folk to the airwaves, becoming one of the most frequently referenced bands of 2009 on classic album polls and indie charts.
Scrobbles of the band's back catalogue had always been consistent but modest, however Merriweather Post Pavilion opened them up to a huge number of new listeners. The drop off of listeners proved much slower than many of their fellow top twenty acts, as 'My Girls' became a surprise radio hit and 'Summertime Clothes' became one of the summer's indie anthems, helped along by mainstream tastemakers like David Letterman. They embarked on a huge live tour, stopping off throughout North America and Europe and at favoured festivals to more than 33,000 of you, unleashing unexpected dance classic 'Brother Sport' on an audience prepared for shoegaze.
Animal Collective will be taking a break from touring when their current dates wrap up, however collective member Panda Bear has announced a short tour in January.
