7 - Katy Perry – “I Kissed A Girl”

“Ain't no big deal / It's innocent”. I think, by now, we all know just what Katy did. “I Kissed A Girl” was a very tough song to escape in 2008 as every shop, bar, club and car had it leaking from the speakers at one point or another. Perry's 'good girl gone sexy' persona gripped boys and girls the world over, and though it attracted no end of controversy every negative reaction seemed to prompt an opposite call in support.

At its heart “I Kissed A Girl” is pure modern pop. With a head-nodding drum loop fleshed out with fairly rocky synths, Perry gets the chance to flaunt her vocal range throughout the track, harmonising with a vocoder to give the bridge a gritty soundclash. It apparently did a lot of good for Last.fm listeners, as it has the highest number of plays per listener in the whole of the top ten.

Still no word on what the girl thought of Perry though.
