5 - Coldplay – “Life In Technicolour”

Self-deprecatingly stating in early interviews that the band wanted to “present the music before the singer came in and ruined it all”, Chris Martin probably wouldn't have guessed quite how much of a cult favorite the opening track from Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends would become.

Not only is “Life in Technicolour” the most popular non-single track on Coldplay's latest album, it has become a firm fixture in the band's top five most listened to tracks on Last.fm. An instrumental that plays with diverse range of influences to false start the album for listeners expecting more of X&Y's anthems-by-numbers. Perhaps a continuation of Eno's long-time obsession with indigenous musics, or maybe just a product of years spent touring by the band in remote and far flung regions, “Life in Technicolour” was largely ignored by reviewers, maybe for the simple fact it doesn't have lyrics, but Last.fm listeners have played it more than “Yellow”, “Clocks” and even “Fix You”, revealing an audience willing to be challenged by an album that once seemed a gamble for a band known primarily for sing-a-long choruses and torch-waving festival moments.
