4 - MGMT – “Electric Feel”

“Electric Feel” is one of the most unusual tracks in the Last.fm Top Ten, and it's certainly not an obvious favorite from MGMT's debut, but by blending the sounds of 80s synth-pop with a rumbling blaxploitation bassline it's definitely the funkiest moment on Oracular Spectacular. The game it soundtracked, and the song's almost mash-up aesthetic, is a perfect example of what has made MGMT so appealing: ignoring fashion in favour of a clash of cultures, they want us all to become exhibitionists and wear our styles loud and proud.

There's a charged sexuality about “Electric Feel” that has had hips grinding in clubs and gigs for the last year, and lyrically the song doesn't hide much (“She's got the power in her hand/To shock you like you won't believe”). That girl's electric, and no mistake, as the band discover what OMD did almost thirty years ago, that “making electricity” together is what the world is all about. It's not the subtlest metaphor but it doesn't need to be, “Electric Feel” exists to make us want to dance, and MGMT do that very well.
