5 - Katy Perry – One Of The Boys

Katy Perry seemed to come from nowhere to take the radio by storm with “I Kissed A Girl”. Heavy rotation on MTV, a slew of adverts and soundtrack placements as well as tabloid baiting lyrics made the track inescapable, and drew a huge a mount of attention to her solo debut. She had previously made waves with the 'Ur So Gay' EP, touted by Madonna as her favorite track at the start of the year, and while she has been dogged by allegations of homophobia since she maintains that it is all drawn from real moments in past relationships, and isn't meant in any way offensively.

Perry has said that it is the new generation of British Female solo artists rather than American icons Britney Spears and Christina Aguillera that best represent where she's coming from, while Shirley Manson, Alanis Morissette and Queen have all been namechecked as influences. Certainly there's something of Lily Allen in the the playful bubblegum pop of One Of The Boys, but Perry largely trains her lyrics on the trials and traumas of relationships, and seems to have struck a chord with Last.fm listeners while doing so.
