10 - Santogold – Santogold

Santi White was perhaps one of the year's more leftfield favorites. A longtime figure on the periphery of the Brooklyn music scene, her debut Santogold was a blogger's delight, and drew favorable comparisons to Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's and Missing Persons. The jerky synth-pop of the latter was a clear influence on Santogold's own twisted disco, although fragments of Pixies, Devo and even Cars have been hinted at by fans and artist alike.

Santi had crept into the spotlight after working with Mark Ronson on 2007's culture-clash juggernaut Version, her cover of The Jam's 'Pretty Green' an overlooked gem, and she also collaborated with the producer on writing 'Littlest Things' for Lily Allen's debut Alright, Still. But it was with 'L.E.S. Artists', a track that snarled at the hipsters of Manhattan while boasting one of the year's catchiest choruses, that Santogold started staking her own place in Pop.

Next year Santogold will be appearing alongside M.I.A., Nick Zinner and Spank Rock on The Spirit of Apollo, the much anticipated debut album from Brazillian duo N.A.S.A., while new material is expected later in 2009.
