1 - MGMT – Oracular Spectacular

Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden formed The Management – later to be shortened to MGMT – while in freshman at University, and started out as an improvisational performance art act before the music began to take shape, forming the songs that would later appear on their debut LP. They toured extensively with Of Montreal between 2005 to 2007, and Kevin Barnes' outfit are perhaps the perfect match for MGMT's spaced-out, hazy electronica.

MGMT seemed to go from worst-kept-secret to pop darlings overnight. In fact, it probably took less time than that: Most people fell in love with Oracular Spectacular within seconds of its 40 minute psychedelic pop starting. A speedy uptake on the blogosphere meant that “Time To Pretend” was debuting in bedrooms across the world at about the same time it was playing in the clubs of Manhattan, London and Paris. Over the summer of 2008 the band became a fixture on the US and European festival circuit, playing Glastonbury, SXSW, Coachella and Roskilde among others, bringing with them the ethereal funk that defined the summer.
