2 - MGMT – Oracular Spectacular

Brooklyn's MGMT could so easily have been slated as try-hard hipsters, but their music proved too damn catchy. Last.fm listeners were among the fastest to respond to the early digital release of the album, and on it's wider release at the start of the year managed to get it into the hands of anyone who would listen. Good work too, as over one and a half million of you had given the album a spin at last count.

With “Kids” and “Time to Pretend” Oracular Spectacular gave rise to some very popular singles, but also brought with it a real variety of album tracks: “The Handshake” speaks with bitter angst about the fear of selling out; “Future Reflections” drew comparisons to a less pompous Muse in its epic rattling pace; “Pieces of What” was the comedown track of the year, melancholy and tinged with regret.

The latest word from the band's camp is that 2009 will see them regrouping to work on writing new songs and recording demos, with an aim to getting out some new songs by the end of the summer. If it's anywhere near as popular as Oracular Spectacular then MGMT could well be here to stay.
